Vessel Condition Inspection

VESSEL CONDITION INSPECTION

Independent Assessment of a Vessel's True Condition

A vessel condition inspection provides an impartial, evidence-based assessment of a ship’s structural, mechanical, and operational condition at the time of attendance. Covering the hull and external structure, cargo spaces, machinery, accommodation, and safety arrangements, the inspection records the vessel’s apparent condition through direct observation and photographic evidence, cross-referenced against her class status and statutory documentation. It supports owners, charterers, buyers, insurers, and P&I interests who require a clear, independent picture of a vessel, free from the commercial interest of any party to the transaction.

OUR METHOD

From the Hull to the Machinery Space

Each inspection follows a structured scope, examining every principal area of the vessel and reconciling what is observed on board against her documented status.

Hull, Deck & Structural Condition

The external hull, main deck, hatch coamings, and visible structure are examined for indications of wastage, deformation, fractures, coating breakdown, and corrosion, with particular attention to areas of known structural stress and previous repair. Where accessible, cargo holds and ballast spaces are assessed for coating condition, hard scale, corrosion of internal structure, and the integrity of frames, brackets, and bulkheads – the areas where a vessel’s true structural health is most honestly revealed.

Machinery & Operational Systems

The main engine, auxiliary engines, and principal machinery are assessed against running hours, load condition, and observable performance indicators, drawing on maintenance records, planned maintenance system data, and condition-based monitoring where available. Supporting systems – including oily water separators, boilers, cooling and lubrication arrangements, and pollution-prevention equipment – are reviewed for operational readiness and compliance, so the assessment reflects not only what is fitted, but how the vessel is genuinely maintained and operated.

Class, Statutory & Documentary Verification

The vessel’s condition on deck is only complete when reconciled with her paperwork. Class Status Reports, Conditions of Class, and statutory certificates are cross-checked to confirm survey status, outstanding recommendations, and continuity of the vessel’s records. Supporting documentation – from the Planned Maintenance System to environmental and equipment records – is reviewed to verify that the vessel’s operational status genuinely aligns with her certificated condition, and any discrepancy between the two is recorded plainly.

Accommodation, Safety & Reporting

Accommodation, galley, and stores spaces are assessed for standard of upkeep and habitable condition, alongside the vessel’s life-saving, fire-fighting, and safety arrangements. All findings across the inspection are consolidated into a clear, structured report – supported by photographic evidence and, where required, a condition rating – stating what was directly observed, what was reviewed from records, and any limitation of access at the time of attendance, so the assessment stands as a fair and defensible account of the vessel.
